Puppy toilet training: routine and rewards
PetTouch ·
Build a routine, reward the right moment and handle accidents without punishment.

A puppy is not having accidents to annoy you. They are still learning and have a small bladder. Offer frequent chances to succeed instead of expecting perfect habits in a few days.
Build a simple routine
Visit the chosen toilet area after waking, meals and play, before bed and regularly through the day. Use a safe place. Ask your vet about outdoor access and contact with other dogs while vaccinations are still in progress. Stay nearby calmly rather than leaving the puppy outside to work it out alone.
Reward the right moment
Praise gently and give a small reward just after the puppy finishes in the right place. Avoid exciting play while they are trying. Sniffing the floor, circling and restlessness may mean it is time for another visit.
Handle accidents calmly
If you find a mess later, simply clean it with a suitable pet-home cleaning product, following its directions. Never shout or rub the puppy's nose in it. Punishment can make them afraid to toilet near you. If you catch an accident happening, guide them calmly to the right place.
Keep expectations realistic
Progress varies, and nights can take longer. A short diary of meals, naps and accidents can reveal a useful pattern. Pain, blood, repeated straining without urine or a sudden change after reliable training needs veterinary advice. Training cannot fix a medical problem.
